On this day two years ago, FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced plans to stand as head of football’s governing body.

The Swiss, notorious for continuously being drenched in controversy, previously affirmed claims assuring his complete lack of involvement as FIFA boss in 2011.

However, the surprise announcement arrived after the Swiss felt compelled to continue as leader, successfully managing to secure the full-support of five out of six continental confederations; the sole disparaging voice heralded from UEFA.

After receiving criticism, the 80-year-old decided to withdraw candidacy in June 2015 amid the infamous corruption scandal.

It was soon discovered Sepp Blatter and UEFA boss Michel Platini were both involved in irregular transactions. In October, FIFA suspended the men after ongoing investigations by the ethics committee before finally dishing out eight year bans for their improper conduct.

1888: First matches in the newly-formed Football League were played, with Derby producing the best result by defeating Bolton 6-3.

1998: St Louis Cardinals baseball player Mark McGwire broke Roger Maris’ 37-year-old record of 61 home runs hit in a single season.

2008: Roger Federer defeats Andy Murray 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 in the US Open final.

2010: John Higgins banned from snooker for six months and fined £75,000 after admitting breaching the rules around betting.
