Jamaica’s prized sprinter Usain Bolt once again proved to doubters why he was still the greatest sprinter of his sport’s history after a clocking 9.77 seconds at the 2013 World Athletics Championships.

Making up for the frustrating false start in Daegu years prior, the six-time Olympic champion decisively overtook his American counterpart Justin Gatlin, who recorded 9.85 seconds, during the race’s dying seconds.

With this victory, Bolt equalled his career’s eighth-fastest race.

He later admitted this performance wasn’t indicative of his full strength, lamenting on the soreness of his legs after competing in the semi-finals. However, the “subpar” 100m sprint in Moscow demonstrated how far ahead he was of rivals and ability to reel in many more career golds.

Other memorable sporting achievements to have happend on this very day:

1929: Babe Ruth becomes 1st professional baseball player to hit 500 homers.

1951: The Braves and Dodgers game becomes first coloured telecast.

1980: Reggie Jackson hits 400th home-run off Chicago’s Britt Burns.

1991: John Daly shoots a 276 at Crooked Stick Ind.
