On this day: July 8, 2012 – Roger Federer defeats Andy Murray to win 2012 Wimbledon title

Federer recorded a record-equalling seventh SW19 singles crown with a 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 success over the Briton on Centre Court, although Murray went on to win their Olympics final at the same venue weeks later.

The legendary Swiss star’s Wimbledon win was his 17th major triumph in total – a record which still stands.

1978: Bjorn Borg beat Jimmy Connors 6-2 6-2 6-3 in the men’s singles final at Wimbledon to successfully defend his title.

2008: Chelsea rejected an approach from Inter Milan for England midfielder Frank Lampard.

2011: Britain’s Bradley Wiggins withdrew from the Tour de France due to a broken collarbone sustained on stage seven.

2014: Germany recorded the largest margin of victory in a FIFA World Cup semi-final with a 7-1 demolition of hosts Brazil.
