On this day: Steffi Graf beat Martina Navratilova at Wimbledon

In an early chapter of their iconic on-court rivalry, Steffi Graf defeated Martina Navratilova 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to win the Wimbledon title in 1988.

Navratilova was then the six-time defending champion, winner of eight of the previous ten Ladies Singles titles and was on a 48-match Wimbledon winning streak.

However, the American was overpowered by Graf who went on to the Golden Grand Slam.

1921: Jack Dempsey KOs George Carpentier for the heavyweight title.

1948: Henry Cotton wins the 77th Open Championship with 284. 

2010: Ghana, the only African teamremaining in the FIFA World Cup, are eliminated by Uruguay in the quarter-finals.
