When the USA men’s basketball team was permitted to be made up entirely of active NBA players for the 1992 Olympics, the game ventured into uncharted territory. Could a star studded line-up of mega stars work cohesively in a national team?

It was a valid question as the team had huge names such as Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, among many others.

But if fans had any doubts over the team’s ability to perform as a unit, they were cleared on this day back in 1992 when Team USA crushed Cuba 136-57 at the Tournament of the Americas. Cuban coach Miguel Calderon simply concluded: “You can’t cover the sun with your fingers.”

Here’s some other memorable events that happened on this day:

1939: Joe Louis TKOs Tony Galent in the fourth round for heavyweight boxing title.

2010: Britain’s Andy Murray defeats 18th seed Sam Querrey 7-5 6-3 6-4 in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

2012: Italy beat Germany 2-1 to reach the final of Euro 2012, which they eventually lost to Spain.

2015: England’s dormer full-back Phil Neville joins the coaching staff of Valencia.
