The Brazilian legend has made a habit of scoring in World Cups.

The then Real Madrid striker was playing in his third global showpiece event and had already netted against Japan in the group stage to equal Gerd Muller’s record of 14 goals.

He did not have to wait long to put himself into the record books 10 years ago today, needing just five minutes in the last-16 round clash against Ghana for his 15th World Cup goal as Brazil won 3-0 in Dortmund.

That proved to be his last goal as the five-time champions were knocked out in the next round by France.

Ironically, Ronaldo’s feat was broken in Brazil in 2014 by Miroslav Klose, whose record of 16 strikes stands today.

1979: Muhammad Ali announced his retirement after 59 fights, only to return a year later.

2009: South Africa beat the British & Irish Lions 28-25 in Pretoria to win the second Test and claim the series.

2012: Spain beat Portugal 4-2 on penalties to reach the 2012 European Championship final.

2014: Luke Shaw becomes the most expensive teenage footballer after his £27m move from Southampton to Manchester United.
