India overcame huge odds to upset defending two-time champions the West Indies to win the third Cricket World Cup by 43 runs, 33 years ago today.

The Windies had won the first two World Cups in 1975 and 1979 and came into the tournament with the best bowling and batting attack in the game.

Things did not look good either for India when they were bowled out for 183, Krishnamachari Srikkanth top-scored with 38.

However, India exploited the weather and pitch conditions to bowl out their opponents for just 140 to complete one of cricket’s most stunning upsets.

Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal both took three wickets, with Amarnath named man of the match.

1968: Bobby Bonds of the San Francisco Giants becomes the first player to hit a grand-slam home run on debut against the LA Dodgers.

1999: The San Antonio Spurs beat the New York Knicks to win the 1999 NBA Finals. Tim Duncan, drafted by the Spurs on the same day two years previously, is named MVP.

2008: A last-minute Philipp Lahm goal sends Germany through to the Euro 2008 final with a 3-2 semi-final win over Turkey.
