Ninety minutes and extra time weren’t enough to decide this clash between Bayern Munich and Valencia in the Champions League final in Milan, with the match having to be decided on penalties.
The German giants edged the Spanish club 5-4 on spot kicks to earn their fourth title and first European Cup in a quarter of a century.
The match also marked the sixth time a European Cup final had to be decided on penalties and the first Champions League final in which all the goals came via penalties.
Gaizka Mendieta and Stefan Effenberg traded penalties in regulation, but goalkeeper Oliver Kahn saved Mauricio Pellegrino’s effort to seal the win for the Bavarians.
