Sir Alex Ferguson is best known for his time at the helm of Manchester United, but one of his greatest achievements was his work done as manager of Aberdeen.

On this day in 1983, the Scottish club claimed the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in the final against Real Madrid, with the winning goal coming in overtime off the foot of John Hewitt.

Aberdeen first got on the board in Gothenburg with a goal by Eric Black, but Madrid answered soon after with a penalty from Juanito.

Neither side could score again before the match went to extra time, setting the stage for Hewitt. The victory marked the last time a Scottish club lifted a European trophy.
