A stunning performance saw Adam Peaty end Great Britain’s 28-year wait for a men’s Olympic swimming gold with the nation’s first medal of the Rio Games.

After the 21-year-old from Uttoxeter won the 100 metres breaststroke to emulate Adrian Moorhouse, who won the same event in Seoul in 1988, Jazz Carlin added silver in the women’s 400m freestyle.

Peaty broke his own world record in winning in 57.13 seconds and also broke the British duck after near misses for swimmer Hannah Miley and fencer Richard Kruse.

Here’s how Twitter reacted after Peaty’s sensational victory.
