American swimming legend Michael Phelps will be competing in his fifth Olympic Games in a few days time in Rio de Janeiro and will be looking to rule the pool just like he did on this day four years ago.

Lining up in the 200 individual medley, he added yet another gold to his ever-growing medal collection in a thrilling finish.

He had to be at his very best to claim his 16th Olympic gold after holding off compatriot Ryan Lochte to clock 1 minute, 54.27 seconds.

Not only was it his first triumph at the London Games, the victory was even more special considering he became the first male swimmer to defend his third straight Olympic title in the same event.

1992: Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 38 consecutive match wins is ended by Sean Storey.

2008: Surrey’s Mark Ramprakash scores the 100th first-class century of his career against Yorkshire.

2012: Sir Chris Hoy claims his fifth Olympic gold medal in the cycling men’s team sprint.

2015: Arsene Wenger finally secured victory over Jose Mourinho as Arsenal beat Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Community Shield.
