Indy Lights leader Edward Jones will be looking to widen the gap to second-placed Jack Harvey as the series reaches the midway stage this coming weekend, with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Oval playing host to Round 8.

Dubai-based Briton Jones began his debut season in storming form, winning the first three races and taking charge of the points table. However, a slight hiccup in rounds four and five appeared to have halted his forward march.

Jones finished fourth and a distant 11th in those rounds, which saw him loose hold of the championship. The 20-year-old, however, bounced back in rounds six and seven at the Indianapolis Grand Prix Circuit earlier this month and wrested back the lead.

The Dubai resident is now six points clear of American Harvey while Florida resident Spencer Pigot is 12 points further back in third.

Following the last two races, Jones had said: “Unfortunately, we had two results really compromised by factors outside our control.

“We still have to take away the positives; that we have come out leading the championship with the potential to win many more races.”

Jones was referring to an incident in the last race where he was jumped off the start by Sean Rayhall and shortly after was tapped into a spin by Harvey, which found him at the back of the field.

Jones, who races for Carlin, has former Formula One driver Max Chilton as team-mate and the pair have put the team within touching distance of the top step of the podium.

Carlin are currently just two points off Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Curb Agajanian in the team championship.
