Learning curve for Jones on streets of Pau

Ed Jones, the Dubai-based British national, ended Round 3 of the European F3 Championship with just four points from three races, but heads to the Hungaroring at the end of the month having learnt a few lessons in street circuit racing in Pau, France.

Ahead of the weekend, Jones had admitted that Pau would be only his second experience racing on a street circuit, after Macau last December, and that qualifying positions would play a crucial role in the race results.

The 19-year-old rookie finished eighth in Race 1 on Saturday after qualifying in ninth the previous day, but not before crashing into the side barrier.

However, the subsequent qualifying rounds for Races 2 and 3 saw Jones pushed down the order, and yesterday he started the morning’s first race in 11th.

The wet conditions were less than ideal, with as many as seven drivers not classified, including Jones who parked his car after spinning out, as they had not completed 90 per cent of the laps covered by the winner.

Tom Blomqvist won Race 2 with Ocon Esteban second and Jake Dennis third. It was always going to be an uphill task in Race 2 for Jones, who started from 13th and eventually finished 17th.

The race was won by Felix Rosenqvist with Esteban and Blomqvist on the podium in second and third place respectively.

The action now moves to the Hungaroring in Hungary from May 30-June 1 for Round 4 of the championship.
