In Race 1, which was the ninth round of Indy Lights, the Carlin driver and his closest rival in the standings – Dean Stoneman of Andretti Autosport – were involved in another fantastic tussle before Jones suffered wing damage and did exceptionally well to finish fourth.

On Sunday, after qualifying for the pole, Jones was again involved in a fight with his fellow Englishman, before the two made contact. Jones was forced sideways, then got collected by his unfortunate Carlin teammate Felix Serralles.

The 21-year-old Jones, who is sponsored by Jebel Ali Resorts and Hotels and Asteco, returned to take 13th place after a change of rear wing.

After the race, Jones tweeted: “Tough day. Was walking away with the race in the wet until the caution came out, then got run out wide and ended up being collected. Iowa next!”

Stoneman himself had trouble after the contact, a puncture which saw him finish in ninth place.

Jones lead at the top has now been trimmed to 19 points. He tallies 213 points after 10 rounds, with Stoneman on 194.

Race 10 winner, Uruguayan Santiago Urrutis of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, has moved to third place in the points table on 189.

Zach Veach of Belardi Auto Racing completed a fine weekend by finishing third in Round 10 after winning Race 1 on Saturday. He has now moved up to sixth place at 168 points.

The conditions were treacherous at Elkhart Lake’s Road America circuit after heavy overnight rain and Jones took full advantage of his pole position to lead the field away from the rolling start.

After Lap Eight, Jones was involved in a heated battle for the first place Stoneman when the two had a contact on Turn Six, moments after Jones had regained the lead.

Round 11 of Indy Lights is scheduled for July 9 and 10 at Iowa Speedway.
