The second edition ended last weekend with Karim Al Azhari beating 12 strong competitors to retain his title at Yas Marina Circuit. Despite being dominant throughout the season, the German had to wait until the last round to celebrate his triumph.

Ellis insisted that is proof that the field was strong and has no doubt this season raised the bar.

“Considering the level of driving and that we had a number of novice drivers who’ve never driven

before, this season has certainly been impressive,” he said.

“I really did enjoy the enthusiasm and the passion that these guys have for racing. All these guys love what they were doing and most
importantly, love motorsport and that is a big advantage to have.”

Ellis paid tribute to Al Azhari, who he described as a “great ambassador” for the championship. “Our champion Karim has been a great ambassador not just for us organisers but all the other drivers who compete,” he said.

“He’s hugely experienced and is very willing to help other drivers on how to improve their technique and give advice.

“Gregory Pain was a delight to watch because he only had rallying experience but to win a circuit race in your debut season is very impressive. Ahmed Al Melaihi was very quick and so was Mohammed Abdulghaffer Hussein and Shihab Al Faheem. They are all great drivers and have raised their game because of Karim.”

The third season begins in October and, to ensure the championships remains competitive, Ellis revealed there could be some changes.

“We are always trying to look at how to improve in all aspects, whether how it’s structured or technical issues. We’ll just have to wait and see,” he said.

“The third season will be exciting. We want to get as many people here to come and experience the TRD 86 Cup as possible. It’s a single-make championship and everyone is on the same level with the car and engine. It’s a great way to get out on the track and experience the thrill of racing.”
