Fernando Alonso has tipped Jules Bianchi to land a top seat in Formula One after the Frenchman finally brought to an end Marussia’s long-standing points drought.

Now in their fifth year in F1, and in their 83rd race, Marussia were left celebrating Bianchi’s ninth-place in Sunday’s Monaco GP.

For the smallest team on the grid, the result should stand Marussia in good stead financially, whilst for Bianchi it could be the shot in the arm his career needs.

A product of Ferrari’s young driver academy, the 24-year-old has performed admirably since being handed a drive by Marussia last season.

Ferrari star Alonso, who knows Bianchi well given their links with the Maranello marque, said: “I’m very happy for him.

“He’s part of the Ferrari driver academy, but also a friend. We spend a lot of time together in Maranello.

“He’s a friend and I’m extremely happy for him and very proud of what his result will mean for him in his career. Hopefully with this result he can have a more competitive car next year and show his talent even more.”

Team principal John Booth suggested Bianchi could replace Kimi Raikkonen at some point in the future.

“A lot will depend on Jules and Kimi I’m guessing,” said Booth. “If Ferrari need him, I think he’s ready to go now.”
