Yas Marina Circuit CEO Al Tareq Al Ameri wants Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to be F1 title-decider as tickets go on sale

Al Ameri, the Yas Marina Circuit CEO, believes the end-of-season showpiece will once again “deliver beyond expectations”, but admitted he hopes the drama of a title-decider is played out in the capital.

“It’s something we experienced in 2014 and it was really electrifying,” said Al Ameri at Sunday’s race launch, with this year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to take place on Sunday, November 27.

“If it comes down to being a title decider, it will bring that electrifying vibe to it, but if not, it will still be a celebration and a truly exciting event. I’m not sure if it will be decided in Abu Dhabi but what I’m sure of is people will, regardless of the race, have a good experience at Yas Marina Circuit.”

The race launch coincided with the opening round of the new season, which saw Mercedes driver Niko Rosberg claim a hugely dramatic victory in the Australian Grand Prix ahead of team-mate and reigning champion Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso crashed out in Melbourne while Rosberg overtook four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who had led the race in its early stages before finishing third.

Al Ameri hopes the same excitement will be on show in Abu Dhabi in eight months’ time.

“We hope there’s a reshuffle in the deck,” he said.

“Mercedes have their team locked in and the engine, but I believe Ferrari is pushing them to their limits and will be a contender. Hopefully we see a rivalry develop over the course of the season, and hopefully it will be played out in Abu Dhabi. And that is the dream scenario for us.

“The season just started today and there’s a whole lot in front of us and we will watch closely.”

November’s race will be the eighth staging of it in the Emirates. With many drivers singing its praises and Abu Dhabi being one of the most popular among the newer circuits, Al Ameri is delighted with the race’s progress.

“It really feels like it’s coming into its own as a big part of the F1 calendar,” said Al Ameri.

“In the seven years we have hosted it, Yas Marina Circuit and Abu Dhabi have really put themselves in a unique position.

“People are enjoying it more and more… from fans to teams and drivers. People have got behind it and we’re getting the most out of it.”

Organisers will reward F1 fans who buy tickets early, with those booking before May 31 eligible for a 30 per cent discount, with people buying between June 1 and July 31 offered a 20 per cent discount.

Tickets are now available online at www.yasmarinacircuit.com and through the call centre (800 927) or 02 659 9800.
