Marc Marquez wins at Indy to extend US stranglehold

Two-time defending world champion Marc Marquez claimed his fifth consecutive win on US soil by capturing the Indianapolis MotoGP on Sunday.

Spanish Honda rider Marquez came from behind to beat runner-up and countryman Jorge Lorenzo, of Spain, while Italian superstar and championship points leader Valentino Rossi finished third. 

Marquez covered the 27-lap, 112.59km Indianapolis Motor Speedway course in 41 minutes, 55.371 seconds with Yamaha’s Lorenzo, 0.688 seconds behind.

Rossi retains his lead in the world championship with a 13-point advantage over teammate Lorenzo.

Sunday’s win was Marquez’s second in succession at the track to add to his three in a row at the Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas.
