The annual J9SOX Challenge has been created to support the efforts of the internationally recognised J9 Foundation, which actively works toward raising both the profile and awareness of Motor Neuron Disease (MND).

Organiser of the J9SOX Challenge, Julek Szczawinski, said, “Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and ALS affects many people across the world, so, much like the awareness campaign of the recent ice bucket challenge, which focused on raising awareness about ALS, we created this tournament to raise awareness, and educate the public about MND and ALS”.

“We play the tournament under the maxim that ‘sometimes in life you don’t always have a choice’ so the players have no say in which team they play for and they have to walk the course in a pair of outrageously coloured socks” added Szczawinski.

Played in a Ryder Cup style-format, the Challenge features teams wearing custom, one-off, brightly coloured socks, and has the players paired with unknown partners and requires each team to follow a set of rules designed to put them well out of their comfort zone.

Founder of the J9 Foundation, legendary South African rugby scrum half, Joost van der Westhuizen, an MND sufferer himself, will be travelling to Dubai to host the event and will once again captain his team against this year’s local captain of Industry, Kez Taylor, Managing Director of ALEC Construction.
