Tee up for Abu Dhabi Harlequins’ injured Mike Ballard

There’s still a few days remaining to sign up for the Mike Ballard Texas Scramble golf tournament, organised by Abu Dhabi Harlequins in partnership with Yas Links.

Taking place next Friday with a 13:30 Shotgun, the event is in support of the AD Harlequins player Ballard, who is recovering after suffering a spinal injury sustained in the ARFU West Asia Champion Club final on April 4.

The prop is currently in a wheelchair and receiving treatment in Michigan in the United States.

And to help with the costs, all proceeds from the golf day will go to the Mike Ballard Foundation, which was set up by the UAE capital side.

Ed Lewsey, former team-mate and a good friend of Ballard, said: “An inspiring figure, Mike is popular throughout the Gulf rugby community and beyond. He is a great man and always there to help people.

“He is respected by the rugby community in the UAE and is such a humble person, who worked with autistic children when he was in Abu Dhabi.

“He certainly hasn’t been forgotten even though he isn’t with us in the UAE as he recovers from his injury and this golf tournament is just another part of supporting him and his family through this tough time.”

It’s not the first time the UAE rugby community have come together for Ballard, with an Abu Dhabi side beating Dubai in an exhibition match in May, as well as several social events.

The latest fundraiser is a golf tournament at one of the country’s best courses.

The 18-hole event consists of two categories – the Fourman Team, entry costing Dh2,000, while an individual pays Dh550.

If you don’t want to take part but still want to be involved, then entry on the day costs Dh175. Included in the price are welcome juices, as well as a buffet and two further complimentary beverages.

And Lewsey, who has known Ballard for three years, says attending the event will make a “huge difference”.

He said: “It’s going to be a very enjoyable day with a lot of activities lined up. There will be speeches and auctions with every penny raised going to the Foundation.

“Just being there will make a huge difference as we try to raise a lot of money for Mike as he continues his rehabilitation.”

Chris White, general manager at Yas Links, said: “We invite all to Yas Links, especially those who knew Mike and to those who want to raise money to help him in his rehabilitation, both physically and emotionally.

“All who join the day’s event will be contributing to the foundation from their entry fee though additional donations are always welcomed.”

Donations are also welcome by emailing elewsey@britishschool. sch.ae, and sponsorship opportunities are also available by contacting reception@yaslinks.com.
