You’d think the heat would slow things down for keen golfers here in the UAE but Ramadan always breathes new life into the sports scene in the country and this year is no different.
The Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club are hosting their annual Ramadan Midweek Open this Thursday July 24, and they’re inviting all amateur golfers in the UAE to sign up before the deadline on.
The tournament is one of two Open events played during the holy month of Ramadan at the club.
After proving a major hit in the past few years, the club will be hosting the Ramadan Midweek Open for a fifth consecutive season and will be welcoming golfers from across the UAE, provided they have a valid handicap.
The competition will begin at 16:00 sharp with a shotgun start and is limited to the first 56 golfers to enter.
There will be prizes for both net and gross divisions, with priority as always going to net scores.
The field will be split into two divisions dependent upon handicaps and there will be two further prizes for these divisions.
Last year’s winner Nick Reincke, representing the Emirates Golf Federation, will be returning to try and become the first ever back-to-back champion.
The prizes for this year’s event have been supplied by the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club’s new Pro Shop supplier GolfWorld and range from shirts, towels, Pro V1 balls to a Golf Travel Bag.
“The 5th Ramadan Midweek Open is a fun-filled event which allows golfers to still play some competitive golf during the holy month of Ramadan,” said Ben Derbyshire, the head golf professional at the club.
“The format is stableford making it much more appealing than a stroke play event as golfers can pick up their balls if they are having a bad hole.
“We have some superb golfing gifts on offer supplied by the new SGSC Pro Shop Golf World for both net and gross scores and low and high handicap brackets.”
The handicap index limit for the Open is 28 and the tournament is open for both men and women, while the event will be followed by a presentation dinner at approximately 21:00.
Entry fees start from Dh85 for juniors who are members of the club and Dh100 for junior non-members and go up to Dh400 for a Tournament Preparation Pass which includes entry fees and unlimited golf course and academy access (inclusive of cart hire) from Sunday to Wednesday.
“Open competitions at SGSC are extremely successful. We normally have a full field of golfers signed up to many of our different events,” added Derbyshire.
“We try and give both members and guests a wide range of different formats to play making their experience extremely enjoyable.
Competitors when playing at Sharjah are also thankful for the many scoreboards set up around the clubhouse and the course allowing all golfers to see where they stand compared to the other golfers.
“There is also plenty of food and drinks on offer at our post game presentation and buffet.”
