After extensive research, the US-based National Hole-in-One Association have come to the conclusion that the chances of an amateur making an ace is one in 12,500.

That would mean if someone plays each round to par 72, it would take him roughly 174 rounds to get that exhilarating feeling of the ball disappearing in the cup with that one special shot off the tee.

Of course, most players will go through their lifetime and never experience the joy of making a hole-in-one.

But no such issues with Andrew Cumming, who last month got his first.

A superb three-wood shot made that perfect trajectory through the air, bounced on the green, and rolled straight into the cup.

And just in case some of you are wondering why the brouhaha over a hole-in-one, it’s because Andrew was just five years old (now six) when he achieved the feat.

That came on the 93-yard eighth hole of the Par-3 course of The Address Montgomerie.

As per the Guinness Book of World Records, the youngest male golfer to record a hole-in-one is American Christian Carpenter, aged four years and 195 days at the Mountain View Golf Club in North Carolina on December 18, 1999.

Andrew, a Year 1 student at Horizon School, was playing with his father Iain and younger brother Fraser.

The family moved to Dubai from Scotland three years ago, and the young man took a liking to the game around the same time.

“He was ecstatic. He ran around the tee screaming," said his very proud dad.

“I am not sure how realistic it is, but he wants to be a golfer. He is very keen on the game.”

A six-handicapper himself,  Iain said the love of golf was passed on by him. “It is my influence, but we didn’t push him into it. It is him who asks to go to the golf course, not me forcing him to,” he added.

“Andrew has played golf since he was two years old and is a fanatic.

“If he is not playing golf, he is watching it on TV or on his iPad. Rory McIlroy is his favourite golfer. Not sure why, but probably because he is young and hits the ball miles.”

Andrew joins the Junior Programme at The Montgomerie this week, the first time he will receive formal coaching.

“I always just wanted him to play for fun and enjoy it,” Iain added.
