Ryder Cup diary: ‘Hey Lee’ takes the award for best first-tee song

Sport360°'s golf expert Joy Chakravarty is stationed at Gleneagles for the 2014 Ryder Cup and each day is providing a diary of the goings-on from Scotland.

After day two, Joy provides his thoughts on the parody songs created by Europe fans for their golfers…

One of the traditions of the Ryder Cup, at least for the European fans, is to come prepared with a parody of some famous song, and serenade their players as they walk on to the first tee.

This year has been no exception. So, Thomas Bjorn walks in to the chorus of ‘Bjorn defeat the USA’, sang to the tune of Bruce Springsteen classic ‘Born in the USA’, while Martin Kaymer could not hide his smile as the fans sang ‘Kaymer, Kaymer, Kaymer, Kameleon’ based the 80s hit ‘Karma Chameleon’.

For Henrik Stenson, what better than ‘Thank You Henrik Stenson’, which was a much better version than ABBA’s original ‘Thank You for the Music’.

But my favourite was ‘Hey Lee’ for Lee Westwood, inspired by The Beatles’ ‘Hey Jude’. The song goes: “Hey, Lee… your short game’s good… but your long game… is even better”. Genius, aren’t they?

Faldo clarifies

After creating a huge controversy on Friday by calling Sergio Garcia “useless” and “with a bad attitude” during the 2008 Ryder Cup, Nick Faldo made an attempt to clarify his comments on air on Saturday.

Commentating on The Golf Channel, Faldo said: “You’re doing live television. Terry (Gannon) throws out the word that Sergio’s career has been exceptional. Of course, I jump in.

“In semi-jest, I used a word which, maybe I could have chosen a better word.

“If I had gone for lousy, that might have captured it better because that was his worst-ever Ryder Cup.

“I believe I know the reasons why, but I am not going to add any more fuel to the fire.

“More importantly, I wish Sergio and the European team an exceptional day today.

“That is all it is. It is a long time ago and when you react on live television, it might come over a little harsh, but there was no malice. Simple. We move on.”
