  • JOY CHAKRAVARTY sticks his neck out and predicts upset wins for Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Matteo Manassero, and exit for Ian Poulter in Wednesday’s opening round (Winner underlined).

    (1) Luke Donald v (64) Ernie Els

World No1 hasn’t had the best of starts to the season, but Donald’s solid allround game should be enough to see off the veteran match play expert Els.

    (32) Jason Dufner v (33) Peter Hanson

    (16)KJ Choi v (49) Kyle Stanley

This could be a very tricky one for Choi. Stanley is red hot right now, winning once and finishing second once this year already.

    (17) Brandt Snedeker v (48) Retief Goosen

    (8)Adam Scott v (57) Robert Rock

Would have loved to see Rock advance, but Scotty gets the vote even though he still hasn’t dumped THAT stupid caddie of his!

    (25) Bo Van Pelt v (40) Mark Wilson

    (9)Dustin Johnson v (56) Jim Furyk

Looks like an exciting match-up, but DJ carries too much ammo.

    (24) Thomas Bjorn v (41) Francesco Molinari

Has the potential to turn into the match of the day. Bjorn is playing sensational golf, while Francesco never seems to be in trouble. An upset if Molinari can get his putter to work.

    (4) Martin Kaymer v (61) Greg Chalmers

    (29) David Toms v (36) Rickie Fowler

How do you call this one? Let me go with youth and pick out Fowler.

    (13) Matt Kuchar v (52) Jonathan Byrd

    (20)Bubba Watson v (45) Ben Crane

Potential of a stunning upset. Why? Because you drive for show, and putt for the dough and Crane can easily out-putt the big-hitting Bubba (pic).

    (5) Steve Stricker v (60) Kevin Na

    (28) Louis Oosthuizen v (37) Aaron Baddeley

    (12) Graeme McDowell v (53) YE Yang

I am actually backing G-Mac to reach the quarter-finals at least.

    (21) Hunter Mahan v (44) Zach Johnson

Mahan enjoys a slight edge and seems a better match play player.

    (2) Rory McIlroy v (63) George Coetzee

    (31) KT Kim v (34) Anders Hansen

    (15) Sergio Garcia v (50) Miguel Angel Jimenez

What a match! Unfortunately, Garcia is in super form and Jimenez is struggling.

    (18) Keegan Bradley v (47) Geoff Ogilvy

No spitting! I am picking the match play expert Ogilvy over the inform Bradley this time.

    (7) Jason Day v (58) Rafael Cabrera- Bello

This one’s a zapper! Day’s a personal favourite of mine, but if RCB shows half of his Dubai form, he can cause a mighty upset. I am willing to put out my neck for the Spaniard.

    (26) Simon Dyson v (39) John Senden

    (10) Charl Schwartzel v (55) Gary Woodland

    (23) Ian Poulter v (42) Bae Sangmoon

That’s the gutsy me! IJP is out in the first round because in Bae, he has a very strong first-round opponent.

    (3) Lee Westwood v (62) Nicolas Colsaerts

But this one is going to be mighty close as Colsaerts is playing very good golf at the moment.

    (30) Robert Karlsson v (35) Fredrik Jacobson

    (14) Nick Watney v (51) Darren Clarke

    (19) Tiger Woods v (46) Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

    (6) Webb Simpson v (59) Matteo Manassero

Hopefully, Matteo can live up to the spark I saw in him while hitting the ball at the driving range in Dubai.

    (27) Alvaro Quiros v (38) Martin Laird

Why? Because Quiros is nowhere near his best at the moment.

    (11) Bill Haas v (54) Ryo Ishikawa

    (22) Justin Rose v (43) Paul Lawrie
