More than 60 golfers have already signed up for next month’s Sharjah Cup Open Championship, and if you feel you have what it takes to win the tournament, then get on board before Tuesday’s deadline.

Taking place at the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club (SGSC) on Friday and Saturday, April 3-4, the competition is open to men and women, who hold a valid handicap.

Play will consist of two rounds with the top 52 advancing to Saturday’s play. Since launching in 2011, the Sharjah Cup Open Championship has become one of the flagship events for SGSC.

Last year’s tournament, won by Ikhlas Rahman, attracted over 100 people, and next month’s event looks set to be another success.

“It’s one of the major events of the calendar for us,” said Mark Ruddy, golf events manager at SGSC. “Every year we held the Sharjah Cup Open Championship, we’ve had over 100 people registered. It’s a unique event for the Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club because it’s the only event we hold in the whole year where we have a cut.”

He added: “We have 62 people signed up already but we expect that number to increase before the entry deadline closes as it’s one of our most popular and challenging events.”

Entry fees range from Dh220 ( junior members) to Dh875 (tournament preparation pass). Visitors will be charged Dh625, while EGF and SGSC members can enter for Dh565 and Dh385 respectively.

Included in the fee is golf carts and balls, a maximum of two rounds and lunch. Plenty of prizes will be up for grabs including awards for the top-three finishers and the ladies champion.

With the SGSC one of the finest golf courses in the UAE and given the huge success, Ruddy believes this is an opportunity not to be missed.

He said: “We are catering to the entire market but ideally it will be open for those golfers who have plenty of playing experience.

“What makes this tournament so special is that it has a cut. It means that the golfers will be under a little bit of pressure and will know they’ve got to register a good score to be playing the full tournament.

“People will know what to expect in a challenging but fun tournament. The playing field is in spectacular condition and we are looking forward to hosting another great event.”

So hurry up and be a part of the exciting tournament. Registration shuts at 18:00 on Tuesday.
