This might not be Sparta, but you can still bring out your inner ancient Greek warrior by tackling challenging obstacles in the upcoming Spartan Race.

Fittingly, Mleiha, Sharjah will be the setting for the grueling event, with hundreds of participants set to attempt the course at the preserved site, which has 130 years of unspoiled Bedouin culture in its natural landscape.

With a little more than two weeks to go before the Spartan Race takes place on Friday, November 18, there’s still time to register for your chance to run, climb, push, pull, throw and crawl through unknown terrain.

Hardcore obstacle lovers are in luck because for the first time ever in the Middle East, the Spartan Beast is on offer. The formidable series is a true test of both physical and mental strength, as well as perseverance, as it features a 20-plus kilometre course with more than 30 intimidating obstacles.

In addition, the event will also have the most popular category, the Spartan Sprint, which is designed for people of all fitness and endurance levels. The shortest course is 5-plus km long and contains 20-plus obstacles.

Whether you’re a regular on the obstacle course or want to try it for the first time, the Spartan Race caters for everyone.

Mahmoud Deemas, Mleiha Archaeological and Eco-tourism project manager, said: “Over the years, the Spartan Race has proved to be fun, challenging and extremely rewarding for competitors.”

“Since it is intended to test the perseverance and overall balance of an individual, participants can choose challenges according to their preferences and can lay down the gauntlet to their families, friends and colleagues with an offer of friendly competition.”

He added: “The youth in any nation is its real wealth. That is why the UAE’s wise leadership has paid its young people particular attention, launching an array of initiatives such as the Spartan Race – activities that push them to their limits.

“This will aid comprehensive development in all aspects of UAE life, especially sports.”

Spectators are also welcome to support their Spartans and to enjoy the Festival Area, which will have viewing areas, as well as  music, hands-on obstacle challenges, local food and beverage vendors and sponsor giveaways throughout the day.

The registration fee begins at Dh145 for the Spartan Beast and Dh72 for the Spartan Sprint, while its Dh20 for spectators. Sign up through www.spartanarabia.com.
