Their Premier Football 7s kicks off for another edition with the Sunday leagues beginning next week (from May 22), while the Tuesday event starts two days later at Dubai American Academy.
As the UAE’s largest sport and social club with over 5,000 members, Duplays know a thing or two about sport.
Running since 2007, their leagues cover a range of sports including volleyball, cricket, and badminton, which are hugely popular and the Duplays Football 7s will look to build on that.
Previous competitions have been a huge success both in Dubai and in Abu Dhabi, and Gareth Curtis, operations manager at Duplays, insists this month’s competition will be no different.
“The Duplays Premier Football 7s is a really big thing and it’s really huge for us,” Curtis said.
“It follows on from the leagues that we’ve held in Dubai as they’ve been very popular and have attracted big numbers.
“We get a lot of competition for places in the league and teams tend to miss out as they fill up quickly. So what’ve done is listened to the feedback from the players and introduced more tournaments.”
The event will run over nine weeks with the 25-minute matches played weekly between 19:00 and 23:00 ahead of the final round in mid-July.
The Duplays 7s is the latest in its vast offering of sports leagues.
With a week to go until the leagues begin, Curtis insists there are plenty of positives to signing up.
“Playing team sports with other people is a far more enticing prospect than pounding the treadmill in busy gyms. It’s less intimidating, less costly and so much more fun and social,” he said.
“We hold five-a-side tournaments that’s been a big hit for us and we expect the Premier Football 7s to be no different.
“It’s coming to the end of the season and it’s a great opportunity to keep fit and meet new people. The atmosphere is very lively and I’m sure people will go home with a smile whether they’ve won or lost.”
Entry costs Dh3,750 per team or Dh500 for an individual.
