Going Out: Sportsmania’s new five-a-side tournament offers great opportunity for women to showcase skills

Following the success of their men’s football tournaments, Sportsmania have launched their first ladies’ competition with registrations still open.

The five-a-side event gets underway from 17:00 on Saturday, February 6, at Dubai’s Jumeirah Lake Towers and with seven teams already signed up, you can still join them ahead of Thursday’s deadline.

Sportsmania are no strangers to hosting championships. Since opening last year, the venue has organised various tournaments, often attracting more than 25 sides each time.

While those were aimed for men, Sportsmania listened to the feedback and are sure the women’s game will grow.

“For a long time we’ve been hosting men’s tournaments which proved to be successful,” said Fouad Ghandour of Sportsmania.

The new tournament offers women a great opportunity to showcase their skills.

“Then we listened to people what they wanted and the ladies tournament idea came up.

“There was a big demand and we found there are many women of different nationalities who play football in Dubai and thought it would be a great idea to launch a tournament for them.

“We have had seven teams signed up which is very encouraging and quite amazing since registration
opened earlier this month. But we want more teams on board and hopefully we will have 16 sides.”

With trophies and medals up for grabs, there’s everything to play for. Squads must be no more than seven with minimum age of 14.

They are guaranteed three games each with entry fees costing Dh199 per team. “We know this will be another great tournament for us,” said Ghandour.

“The tournament will be overseen by qualified referees, be well organised plus they will be playing on great sporting facilities, so there’s plenty to gain by competing.

“We want to play our part in promoting a healthy lifestyle, ensuring people remain fit by playing a sport they thoroughly enjoy.”

He added: “The most important thing is we want the ladies to enjoy themselves. Playing football is a fun sport and it’s a great way to meet new people. This is only the beginning of ladies football at Sportsmania and I’m pretty sure we’ll organise many more tournaments in the future.”
