A summer of sport: Dubai Sports World opens its doors

All the answers to your burning questions about how to beat the heat this summer while staying active can now be found in Sheikh Saeed Halls 1 and 2 of the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) when this year’s largest indoor summer sporting event in the Middle East, Dubai Sports World (DSW), re-opens on Friday.

Entering its third year, Dubai Sports World offers a range of popular athletic games and fitness opportunities for the young and old and expects to receive thousands over the hot, sticky months.

Back by popular demand, Duplays will host a series of one-day tournaments designed to invigorate residents of the UAE. Open to all ages and skill levels, tournaments include five-a-side football, basketball, rugby, dodgeball, volleyball, and squash.

Parents can additionally sign their youngsters up for a range of summer camps offered by Active Sports and IFA Sport.

The award-winning Original Fitness Co. will also be there to dish out fitness for all. Come down and try out their nationwide-famous boot camp sessions, yoga, personal training and more at their makeshift functional gym at the venue.

Alternatively, drag along a friend to join you on one of the 12 free-to-use ping pong tables that will be set-up in the Entertainment Zone courtesy of Ping Pong Dubai – a non-profit venture between the UAE Table Tennis Association, Dubai Sports Council, and Falcon and Associates.

The UAE No 1 Rashid Abdul Hamid and UAE No 2 Rashed Mohd Abdulla Hassan, along with other players and coaches, will make regular appearances to offer tips to novice and budding amateur players.

Top class facilities: Dubai Sports World have five-a-side and seven-a-side pitches.

“We welcome everyone in Dubai to join us at Dubai Sports World and discover that table tennis is a fun and social way to be more active,” said Abdul Hamid, also urging interested persons to keep abreast of their activities and events over the summer via the Ping Pong Dubai Facebook page.

Looking for something more edgy and extreme? Well, the aptly named Rage Skate Park will cover your bases. Skaters and BMXers will be able to sharpen their skills at DSW’s one-of-a-kind skate park featuring rails, mini ramps, fun boxes, and grind boxes. Rage will also hold classes for beginners who want to learn and improve their skills on deck.

Alex Medvedev from Rage Stake Park said: “We will also be hosting three competitions throughout the summer: the Rage Indoor Skateboarding and BMX Championships, the Ramadan Skate and BMX Competition, and the Eid Skate and BMX Competition.

“All of these are designed to showcase the very best talent in the UAE and give spectators something exciting to watch. They’re meant to be celebrations of the sport, which is as physical as it is creative.”

Or why not sign on to their Ride Club Challenge, a pedalling contest that will see participants go the distance for grand prizes in a tense final to be held on August 9.

A demo for the challenge will be held this Friday, while the first big pedal-off will get rolling on Saturday at 09:00. Fifty-minute indoor cycling classes will also run on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 08:00 and 20:00.

Ride Bike Shop, Adventure HQ, G Force Cricket Academy and Dubai Badminton School are some other names expected. And in July a huge draw will be the Dubai Indoor Football Championship (July 2-6) where the very best in European and regional teams will compete head-to-head in a series of football matches to delight spectators.

The fun won’t stop until August 21 so don’t break a sweat stressing over your summer plans.
