Harry Kane was at his clinical best to lead England to victory in World Cup opener vs Tunisia

Harry Kane’s double saw England begin their World Cup campaign with a victory, with the captain heading the winning goal in injury time.

Here’s a look at how he fared in his side’s 2-1 Group G victory against Tunisia.

Role

Lined up alongside Raheem Sterling as part of a two-pronged attack in front of a midfield five, which saw Tottenham team mate Kieran Trippier and Ashley Young deployed as wing-backs.

Kane’s job was to lead the line and provide a focal point for attacks with Sterling, Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard providing pace around him.

Goal threat

Kane and England made the perfect start to the tournament as he tapped home from close range to score after just 11 minutes. Young floated a cross into the middle for John Stones to attack and after the Tunisia goalkeeper had made a superb save to keep out his header, Kane was there to pounce on the rebound.

It was his only sight of goal until injury time, when he was on hand to head home from close range following a corner that had been flicked on to the far post by Harry Maguire.

Contribution

The Tottenham striker got his first tournament goals and it might have been more had the referee seen a couple of blatant fouls on Kane, both of which should have resulted in penalties for England.

First Kane was wrestled to the floor by Fakhreddine Ben Youssef after 39 minutes and then again by Yassine Meriah seven minutes into the second half.

Potency

Two chances and two goals for Kane, both predatory strikes from close range. Alert when no-one else was.
