Harry Kane eager to meet the high bar Cristiano Ronaldo has set at World Cup

Harry Kane is already playing catch-up to Cristiano Ronaldo in the World Cup scoring stakes but the England captain is hoping to start a goal spree of his own against Tunisia.

Ronaldo turned in a classic performance with a superb hat-trick as Portugal drew 3-3 with Spain on Friday, instantly turning up the heat on the rest of the tournamentā€™s top marksmen.

Kane happily ranks himself in that elite group and is eager to start chasing down the Real Madrid star in Volgograd when the Three Lions get under way on Monday night.

ā€œFor sure, heā€™s put me under a bit of pressure. Heā€™s a fantastic player who had a fantastic game,ā€ said Kane on the eve of his first World Cup appearance.

ā€œHopefully I will score a hat-trick tomorrow and weā€™ll both be level. But itā€™s not something Iā€™ll be thinking about until later in the tournament. Itā€™s about concentrating on the team.ā€

As well as outrageous ability, one of Ronaldoā€™s defining characteristics is an unquenchable self-belief which can at times threaten to spill over towards arrogance.

Kane is cut from an entirely different cloth, unshowy away from the pitch and unlikely to be taken for a movie star, but he is driven by the same core confidence that drives the very best.

Invited to expand on his journey from perpetual loanee to marquee player for club and country, he does so with pride and finishes with a flourish.

ā€œFour years ago, I was watching it (the World Cup) on holiday,ā€ said the Tottenham man.

ā€œI played the last six or seven games of the Premier League season under Tim Sherwood and then Mauricio Pochettino came in that summer.

ā€œHe got me fit, in better shape and more powerful. I kicked on from there with a lot of hard work and determination, there were players ahead of me at the time.

ā€œI had to work hard on the training pitch and take the opportunities when they came. The last few years Iā€™ve proved myself and now Iā€™m here and I canā€™t wait to get out there and show the world what Iā€™ve got.ā€

As for the captaincy, the 24-year-old feels lifted rather than weighed down by it.

He has already scored six goals in five outings as skipper and confirmed goalkeeper Nick Popeā€™s reports that he has been in prolific touch at the teamā€™s Spartak Zelenogorsk base camp this week.

ā€œIā€™m enjoying it for sure. Iā€™m still the same person and team-mate, but Iā€™ve been scoring a few more goals in training, perhaps,ā€ he said.

ā€œIā€™m proud to be England captain and excited to get going now. Hopefully Iā€™ll continue scoring more goals into this World Cup, for sure.ā€

Englandā€™s first day at their specially rebuilt training complex saw them welcomed with traditional gifts of decorative korovai bread and samovar tea ā€“ with Kane on hand to accept alongside manager Gareth Southgate.

The tea was served in an ornate golden urn, allowing photographers an unmissable opportunity.

The serendipity of the image was not lost on the striker, who added: ā€œObviously I see a few of the jokes going round on social media. Itā€™s all fun and games.

ā€œIā€™ve got a lot of scoring trophies in my career. Iā€™d like to be sitting here with a big gold one in a few weeks.ā€
