Leroy Sane backed to come back stronger after disappointment of World Cup snub

20:45 07/06/2018

Manchester City winger Leroy Sane missed out on a place in Germany’s World Cup squad because he failed to impress in training and matches, but can learn from the experience according to national team coach Miroslav Klose.

The 22-year-old was a shock omission from Joachim Low’s final 23-man party for the tournament in Russia, having starred in City’s record-breaking Premier League campaign and been a regular in Germany’s recent matches.

Sane’s performances for City earned him the PFA Young player of the Year award as he scored 10 league goals and added 15 assists, second only to team-mate Kevin De Bruyne in that category.

Following the decision, Sane issued a statement via his Twitter account vowing to “bounce back stronger”.

Klose defended the decision to leave Sane out in favour of Bayer Leverkusen’s Julian Brandt and praised the response of the City winger.

“It was a very close decision. I thought it was amazing how he reacted. He knows he has to draw conclusions from this. I am in good spirits that he will learn from this,” Klose said at a press conference on Thursday ahead of Germany’s friendly against Saudi Arabia.

“He is incredibly talented and brings with him an uncanny speed.

“With us he could not show what he did in the Premier League. He had many situations in training and during the games where he couldn’t establish himself.

“It was a decision for Julian Brandt and not for Leroy.”
