Banned Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has sensationally denied claims that he bit or "intended to bite" Italy's Giorgio Chiellini according to the Associated Press who say they have seen Suarez's defence submitted to FIFA.

On Thursday Suarez was given a four month ban from all forms of football and a nine game suspension from international football.

This was brought about after footage emerged from Uruguay and Italy's crucial group D encounter which Suarez's side went on to win, knocking out the Italians in the process.

"After the impact … I lost my balance, making my body unstable and falling on top of my opponent," explained Suarez in the statement.

"At that moment I hit my face against the player leaving a small bruise on my cheek and a strong pain in my teeth.

"In no way it happened how you have described, as a bite or intent to bite."

FIFA also confirmed today that Uruguay have appealed against the governing body's decision.

FIFA head of media Delia Fischer told a news conference in Rio de Janeiro: "We have received a declaration that they are planning to appeal. They informed us of their intention to appeal yesterday evening.

"The reasons for the appeal must now be given in writing within a deadline of seven days after the three days has expired."
