Diego Maradona made the ultimate football faux pas on Sunday night when he made the decision to leave the Estadio Mineirao moments before the final whistle, thus missing the stunning winner from Lionel Messi.

The legendary figure was clearly frustrated at seeing Argentina struggle to break down Iran and decided he had seen enough.

However, just moments after leaving his seat Messi would score a sensational winner to secure a last 16 berth for Argentina.

It was a stunning goal, worthy of winning any game and Maradona will undoubtedly be kicking himself for not staying to the very end.

Meanwhile, on social media an image of Messi under a spotlight was shared thousands of times in just a few minutes as it proclaimed the picture summed up Argentina's World Cup so far.

And we have to agree, it really has been the Messi show.
