Brazil’s star striker had a night to remember in the opening match of the 2014 World Cup as not only did he score two goals and receive the man-of-the-match award – but he also gained 165,000 Twitter followers. 

The Barcelona forward has fully embraced social media and regularly posts on both Twitter and Instagram, taking to both sites shortly after starring for Brazil against Croatia. 

Neymar posted a ‘selfie’ of him and his model girlfriend Gabriella Lenzi, telling his 5.7 million Instagram followers: "Thanks for being part of this moment, this great dream I'm doing!' Today was an almost perfect day … Just missed seeing you kkkk. Happy Valentine's Day my love!"

@NeymarJr was also the most-mentioned player on Twitter during the opening match of the 2014 World Cup with over 12.2million tweets sent out. 

His popularity appears to be growing by the day as he has become the posterboy for the World Cup in his home country. 

And his followers will surely only grow throughout the tournament, especially if he maintains his sparkling form on Tuesday when Brazil face Mexico.
