Liverpool not favourites against Barcelona in Champions League, says Jurgen Klopp

Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged that his Liverpool side will not be favourites when they face Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.

The first leg is next Wednesday in Barcelona, with the return leg at Anfield the following Tuesday.

Klopp has never faced Barcelona, but alluded to his history against their fiercest rivals, with his Dortmund side having faced Real Madrid on six separate occasions, most memorably the two legs of the 2013 semi-final when Klopp’s team won the first leg 4-1 en route to the final. Madrid also beat Klopp’s Liverpool in last year’s final.

“I have played against Real Madrid many times, but never in Barcelona,” he said, as quoted by AS.

”You want to see what is possible. The cool thing about Barcelona is that you’re never a favourite. To deal with the role, perhaps to do things differently than others, that is appealing, even if I have not made any concrete thoughts about it yet.

”Once we were in Barcelona with Liverpool on a Christmas trip, in a game against Gladbach. But to have seen that this is just a stadium and not a temple, that was certainly important.”
