Bayern Munich legend Oliver Kahn believes Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is better than Manuel Neuer as he previews the Champions League round of 16 tie between the two sides.

With Bayern having won their group and Liverpool finishing second in theirs, the two storied clubs were drawn against each other for the first knockout stage, with both of course boasting top-class goalkeepers.

Neuer was long regarded as the best goalkeeper in the world, but has seen his stock fall over the last couple of seasons, while Alisson’s form has been key to Liverpool’s progress in the Premier League and Europe this season.

“At the moment it’s Alisson,” Kahn, among the best goalkeepers of his era, told Goal when asked to pick between the two.

“He showed at the World Cup that he is a world-class keeper.

“Neuer did not manage to play as good as he did before since returning from his injury.

“I think two things broke his rhythm a little bit: the early exit from the World Cup and his injury.

“It is not easy when you know as a player: ‘If something happens to my foot again that might be it for my career’.

“Those are psychological aspects that play a role. He must find perfect confidence in his body and then he will find his old level again soon.”
