Man United player ratings as Paul Pogba earns a 7 but Romelu Lukaku gets 3

Juventus secured a 1-0 win over Manchester United in a Champions League group stage clash on Tuesday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo was once again victorious on his second return to Old Trafford since his departure over nine years ago but it was Paulo Dybala who scored what proved to be the winner in the 17th minute.

United emerged from the break a better side but the Italian champions were still able to see out the win comfortably.

Here, we rate the performances of United’s players.

STARTING XI

David De Gea – Nothing he could do to stop the goal and made a couple of outstanding saves. Looked every bit the world-class keeper he’s made out to be. 7

Ashley Young – Was up against Cristiano Ronaldo and largely dealt with the Portuguese, albeit with a couple of niggly fouls along the way. 6

Chris Smalling – A solid display from the Englishman. Coped with Ronaldo when he drifted in and even helped push United forward in the second half. 7

Victor Lindelof – Unlike his centre-back partner, Lindelof struggled with his positioning and looked like the weak-link in the back-line but was better after half-time. 5

Luke Shaw – Didn’t do too much wrong in defence but was caught out a few times by Joao Cancelo when Anthony Martial didn’t offer support. 6

Nemanja Matic – Was anonymous in the first half but did offer a bit of steel in the second. Offered little with his passing, though. 5

Paul Pogba – Showed glimpses of brilliance in one of his better performances and hit the post with a neat turn and shot but had little movement ahead of him. 7

Marcus Rashford – Ran his socks off as always but his final ball was dreadful. Struggled to beat his man one-on-one and his movement lacked imagination. 5

Juan Mata – Didn’t turn up at all in the first half as United barely had the ball and the game passed him by, but was one of the more influential figures in the second period. 6

Anthony Martial – Cancelo kept running off him and threatening United’s defence. Usually so good dribbling past defenders, he rarely made any inroads on this occasion. 5

Romelu Lukaku – Completely isolated in the first half and everything seemed to bounce off him in the second. Looks short of confidence and sharpness. 3
