Antonio Valencia will not play in Manchester United’s Champions League group stage opener against Young Boys on Wednesday.

Manager Jose Mourinho confirmed the right-back will not be involved due to concerns how he would react to the Swiss side’s artificial surface.

Mourinho told a press conference: “We decide not to bring Antonio Valencia because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch. Luke Shaw is playing tomorrow.”

Reports suggest that summer signing Diogo Dalot may be handed his debut at right-back.

The 19-year-old completed the full 90 minutes in an Under-23 clash with Reading on Friday. However, Ashley Young may start on the right with the new signing having to settle for a place on the bench.
