Liverpool scored five goals then gave up two to open the door for Roma in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield to set up a tantalizing second leg in Rome next week.

Mohamed Salah was the star of the show, netting twice against his former club and also providing two assists, but Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be left wondering how his side allowed Roma to claw themselves back into the tie.

Here are our player ratings:

STARTING XI

Loris Karius – 7 : Did what was needed which wasn’t a lot untol the goals late on, where he was not at fault

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7: Impressive performance from the young right-back, who pushed forward dangerously throughout

Dejan Lovren – 5: Was caught out for the first Roma goal as he misjudged the pass and allowed Dzeko to score

Virgil van Dijk – 7: Another composed performance. Got Liverpool moving forward with some excellent switches of play

Andrew Robertson – 7: Got forward well in attack but missed one gilt-edged chance at 3-0. Solid at the back

James Milner – 7: Picked up where he left off against City, though not as dominant perhaps, but combined superbly with Henderson

Jordan Henderson – 8: Dominated the midfield with a powerful performance, hunting down the Roma playmakers all night

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 6: Only lasted 18 minutes, looked like a serious injury after a collision with Aleksandar Kolarov, but hopefully will be fit for the return leg

Mohamed Salah – 10: An absolutely superb performance. His two goals were perfectly taken, while his two assists capped a simply perfect display

Robert Firmino – 9: Another non-stop performance from the Brazilian, working hard in defence and attack. Scored twice in second half

Sadio Mane – 7: Missed a glorious chance in the first half but kept working hard and eventually got his goal after the break

SUBSTITUTES:

Georginio Wijnaldum – 7: Busy performance all night after coming on early for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but missed a great chance to make it six late on

Danny Ings – 5: Very curious replacement for Salah on 75 minutes, hardly noticed in the right-wing position

Ragnar Klavan – N/A: A stoppage-time replacement for Firmino as Klopp made sure Liverpool didn’t concede a third
