Lionel Messi backed to break Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League scoring record

17:36 17/03/2018

Lionel Messi‘s brace against Chelsea on Wednesday saw him join Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players with 100 Champions League goals, and Barcelona fans believe their talisman can catch his rival, who holds the competition record with 117 and counting.

Marca survey saw 70% of readers of the Spanish site and 55% of the English site say Messi will match Ronaldo’s record, from a total of 63,000 votes.

The Argentine’s relative age – Messi is 30, whereas Ronaldo is 33 – is being cited as the main reason he can catch Ronaldo’s record.

Messi has scored his 100 goals in 123 appearances, a slightly quicker clip than Ronaldo’s 117 in 148 appearances.

Both players will be looking to add to their tally this season, with Messi’s Barcelona set to face Roma in the quarter-finals and Ronaldo and company due to play a rematch of last year’s final against Juventus.
