Manchester United face Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg, the first-ever competitive meeting between the clubs.

United have lost only one of their previous eight matches in Spain, and here, Press Association Sport looks at those encounters.

Villarreal 0 Man Utd 0, September 14 2005

The most memorable moment from this Champions League group stage opener was a 19-year-old Wayne Rooney being sent off, referee Kim Milton Nielsen showing the forward a second yellow card when he sarcastically applauded the official’s decision to book him for a tackle. Sr Alex Ferguson’s United would go on to finish bottom the pool.

Barcelona 0 Man Utd 0, April 23 2008

A fine Champions League semi-final first-leg result for United could have been even better, with Cristiano Ronaldo having missed an early penalty at the Nou Camp. They subsequently won the second leg 1-0 before famously overcoming Chelsea in the final in Moscow.

Villarreal 0 Man Utd 0, November 25 2008

Both clubs secured qualification from the Champions League group stage with what was a fourth successive goalless draw between them, which saw the hosts reduced to 10 men late on when Joan Capdevila was sent off for a challenge on Ronaldo. United would end up as runners-up, losing the final to Barcelona.

Valencia 0 Man Utd 1, September 29 2010

The run of 0-0 draws for United in Spain was broken in this Champions League group stage game as Javier Hernandez netted an 85th-minute winner, eight minutes after coming off the bench.

Athletic Bilbao 2 Man Utd 1, March 15 2012

United crashed out of the Europa League in the last 16, with Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic adding to a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford to triumph 5-3 on aggregate. Fernando Llorente and Oscar de Marcos scored either side of the interval before Rooney’s late reply.

Real Madrid 1 Man Utd 1, February 13 2013

Things looked promising for United at the end of a Champions League last-16 first leg that had seen Danny Welbeck open the scoring at the Bernabeu and Ronaldo equalise against his old side. But the Red Devils were then eliminated following a 2-1 second-leg loss at Old Trafford, which would prove the club’s last European game under Ferguson.

Real Sociedad 0 Man Utd 0, November 5 2013

David Moyes’ United side edged closer to the Champions league knockout stages with this draw in which Robin van Persie struck a penalty against the post and Marouane Fellaini was sent off.

Celta Vigo 0 Man Utd 1, May 4 2017

Marcus Rashford’s fine second-half free-kick steered Jose Mourinho’s United to victory in this Europa League semi-final first leg. The second leg finished 1-1 and United then beat Ajax in the final.
