Real Madrid face Napoli for the first time in nearly 30 years when they welcome the Serie A outfit to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

The two side’s meet in the first knockout stage of the Champions League as they did back in September, 1987. However, the group stage was non existent then, rendering the knockout round between the 32 teams as the first of the competition.

Napoli was then led by arguably the greatest footballer to ever play the game. Diego Maradona inspired the Italian club to two Serie A titles and a European Cup during his spell in Naples but was shut out on this occasion by Madrid.

Interestingly, the first leg was played behind closed doors due to an incident between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the previous year.

Michel gave the hosts the lead from the spot in the 19th minute before Miguel Tendillo secured the 2-0 win in the 76th minute.

Giovanni Francini scored just nine minutes into the second leg in Naples to give the Italian side hope but Emilio Butragueno equalised two minutes before half-time.

The tie ended 1-1 with Madrid advancing to the Round of 16 with a 3-1 aggregate win.
