Whites in goalless draw with Paraguay

The UAE ended their European tour without victory but on a high, following an impressive 0-0 draw with Paraguay.

Al Ain centre-back Ismail Ahmed came closest to preventing a third-straight stalemate, heading wide from a corner at the start of the second half at Linzer Stadion in Austria.

Los Guaraanies dominated possession throughout but only threatened consistently when forward Jorge Benitez was summoned from the bench. Despite the lack of goals, the match was an entertaining one in which Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz collected his 100th international cap.

The UAE players head home today, following the end of the first stage of their preparations for November’s Gulf Cup defence.

Elsewhere, Al Jazira’s IPIC Cup meeting with Western Sydney Wanderers ended alarmingly, after a fan fell from the terraces during the celebrations of the Pride of Abu Dhabi’s overall tournament victory.

The supporter was rushed into an ambulance after receiving expert care from the on-site medical staff at Military Stadium when a railing collapsed, leading to a 20-foot fall onto the concrete below.

Jazira had earlier sunk to a 2-1 defeat to the AFC Champions League contenders, but claimed the trophy on goals scored after beating Eastern Riffa 4-1 in Tuesday’s opener with the Australians losing 2-1 to the same opponents.
