Former Spain international David Villa is set to join Japanese club Vissel Kobe after leaving New York City.

Villa will depart Major League soccer after four years in the United States when his contract expires and he has announced on social media that his next club will be in the J1 League.

The move will see the 36-year-old striker reunited with former Barcelona and Spain team-mate Andres Iniesta, who left the Camp Nou for Kobe in May.

Villa and Iniesta played together at Barca between 2010 and 2013 during which time they won two La Liga titles, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Villa scored 80 goals in 124 MLS appearances for New York City, winning the MVP award in 2016 after his 23 goals helped the club reach the play-offs for the first time.
