Real Madrid and Manchester United are prepared to pay the €80 million release clause contained in France defender Lucas Hernandez’s Atletico Madrid contract, according to reports.

Hernandez, 22, has grown into a vital player for club and country. He was Les Bleus’ first-choice left back when they won World Cup 2018, plus has made 53 La Liga appearances for Los Rojiblancos.

France Football has stated that such form made Madrid consider a repeat of summer 2017’s crosstown recruitment of brother Theo – now on loan at Real Sociedad.

Not even a raise in buyout clause from €55m to €80m contained in June’s new deal until 2024 for Lucas has quelled their interest, or United’s. Atleti now want to tie him down to lucrative terms that will see this termination price rise to more than €150m.
