With the rumours growing in pace and volume during this ‘silly season’, it can be difficult and painstaking to separate the stories of some legitimacy from the rest of the noise.

LUCAS TORREIRA – FROM SAMPDORIA TO ARSENAL

Midfield powerhouse: Lucas Torreira.

Arsenal are chasing Uruguay’s World Cup star, the Daily Mail reports.

Why it will happen: The Gunners are enjoying a productive summer transfer window under new boss Unai Emery and have made the 22-year-old star their top target.

Why it won’t happen: Following his glittering displays in Russia, Torreira will surely have no shortage of admirers and other options on the table if he wishes to leave Sampdoria.

Prediction: It is likely the defensive midfielder will move on but his price tag could double, given his value ahead of the World Cup was just £25 million (Dh121m).

JUAN FERNANDO QUINTERO – TO PORTO TO TOTTENHAM

Juan Quintero has caught the eye during the World Cup.

Tottenham are trying to sign Porto’s Colombia star, Argentine newspaper La Nueva reports.

Why it will happen: Spurs, as a club, have plenty going for them and a move to the north Londoners would represent a significant step-up in his career.

Why it won’t happen: The 25-year-old is currently on loan at River Plate and the Argentine giants remain in pole position to clinch a permanent deal for the attacker, given they have a pre-agreement in place with Porto.

Prediction: Quintero is likely to sign for River Plate given they will waste no time in acting upon his £3m (Dh14.5m) loan contractual clause.

MOUSA DEMBELE – TOTTENHAM TO INTER MILAN

Moussa Dembele is currently at the World Cup with Belgium.

Inter Milan are interested in signing Tottenham‘s central midfield powerhouse, according to the Daily Mail.

Why it will happen: The Belgian enforcer has just one year left on his contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side and is no closer to penning a new deal. As such, Spurs will be desperate to make some cash on the 30-year-old.

Why it won’t happen: Dembele, despite injury problems, is still an important man for the Whites and hasn’t necessarily gone on record stating he wishes to leave.

Prediction: It will be interesting to see which direction this transfer moves in, with Dembele holding all the cards. Expect some activity post-World Cup.
