European champions Real Madrid have had their eyes on Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez for some time and they are seemingly set to sign him this summer, according to reports.

Los Blancos had intentions to buy the Uruguayan as far back as 2015 but did not wish to further complicate relations with fierce city rivals Atletico.

However, now the Spanish giants believe the situation has changed and are willing to stump up the €60 million release clause for the Uruguayan’s signature, as reported by Spanish outlet Marca.

Gimenez was left out of Atletico’s starting line-up at times last season, sparking doubts about Diego Simeone’s trust in him. He went on to play a part in the Europa League final against Marseille, helping Rojiblancos keep to a clean sheet and the trophy.

The Whites now believe his steep price tag is justifiable given the steep inflation in the transfer market.
