A new book on Neymar‘s record-breaking transfer to PSG last summer also includes the claim that Liverpool offered Philippe Coutinho in a player-plus-cash deal for Real Madrid‘s Gareth Bale.
Author Edicinoes Amphora’s book, PSG: Revelations of a Revolution says Liverpool made the offer despite knowing Coutinho’s preference for a move to Madrid’s rivals Barcelona – a transfer that was ultimately completed in January.
The book says “the Brazilian {Coutinho) was not a major target at Real Madrid”, with Kylian Mbappe the top target at the Santiago Bernabeu last summer. Madrid were reluctant to part with Bale unless it was in a deal for the Frenchman, who also ended up at PSG.
Amphora also claims Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a “massive admirer” of Bale and was supportive of his club’s attempts to sign the player.
Real Madrid are seemingly more open to letting Bale leave this summer, and a return to the Premier League seems likely, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, and former club Tottenham Hotspur all mooted as a landing point.
