Arsenal have completed the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

The Gabon forward has joined the Gunners on a long-term contract for a club-record fee, thought to be in the region of £56 million.

Here, our expert football writers have their say on the transfer.

IS HE THE STRIKER ARSENAL NEED?

Brendon Netto

He’s not tailor-made for their attack, but his goal-scoring has come a long way over the course of his five seasons at Dortmund. He will get plenty of service at Arsenal, though could face a problem against teams who sit back and deny space in behind, negating his speed.

Matt Monaghan

Gunners fan of a certain vintage will welcome the new Freddie Ljungberg. Centre-backs are set to be given nightmares as their new man looks to use his unmatched pace on the counter-attack. Aubameyang comes alive in the penalty box, 97 of his 98 Bundesliga goals were scored there, but these runs come from deep.

Chris Bailey

Any Arsenal fan who has happen to glimpse at an Alexandre Lacazette heat map over the last few months will tell you that the Frenchman is not the No9 he is cracked up to be. Too many times he is caught on the periphery of the box, whereas Aubameyang lives and breathes on those enclosed 18 yards.

IS HE WORTH THE TRANSFER FEE?

Matt Monaghan

Aubameyang’s weight of goals are worth their weight in gold. It is always worth breaking new ground for a player who has scored 100 times since the start of 2015/16. Yet the nagging question is why didn’t Arsenal and manager Arsene Wenger feel this way in the summer when they chose Lyon’s Lacazette?

Chris Bailey

Yes. Aubameyang has more than held his own in his Bundesliga scoring duel with Robert Lewandowski, who plays at an all-conquering Bayern Munich and is rightly considered one of the world’s best, too. That lightning burst behind the defensive line will be easy pickings for Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Brendon Netto

No. Despite his prowess in front of goal, he’s very much a gamble. Take away his pace and it’s a bit like defanging a venomous snake. There’s nothing in his skill set that really takes your breath away. He will score goals but does he make them that much better? Probably not.

WILL HIS TEMPERAMENT BE A WORRY FOR ARSENAL?

Chris Bailey

Not on the face of it, though Arsenal sorely lack for unflappable characters and Aubameyang is hardly someone who will rally the troops when the chips are down. There is also talk that Wenger is not completely on board with the deal. Time will tell how much he truly values his shiny new toy.

Brendon Netto

The good news for Arsenal is, despite a disruptive season of being at loggerheads with the Dortmund management, only Lewandowski has scored more goals in the Bundesliga. He will test the disciplinarian in Wenger but that shouldn’t affect his goal-scoring. However, it could have an adverse effect on a squad lacking leadership.

Matt Monaghan

Arsenal know what they are getting with Aubameyang – new head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has now bought him twice after snapping him up for Borussia Dortmund in 2013. The major concern is how Wenger will control such a personality? In the last decade, too many suspect characters have been indulged rather than corrected. Will he make the same mistake again?
